How the graph is built
Every duration this API returns comes out of a road network we built from public data with public software. This page says exactly how, because the licence on that data requires us to offer it — and because you should not have to take a routing answer on faith.

In detail
The licence behind this page
The road network behind this API is a derived database built from OpenStreetMap, which is published under the Open Database License. Building a database from ODbL data and then serving results from it publicly triggers the licence’s share-alike clause: on request, we owe recipients either that database or the means of creating it, under the same licence.
We would rather pre-satisfy that obligation than field it case by case. So here is the means of creating it. Everything below is public: an extract anyone can download, an open-source engine anyone can run, and a configuration with nothing proprietary in it. There is no secret ingredient, and the product does not depend on there being one — what you are buying is that we run it, keep it current, and answer the phone.
What this does not mean
We do not serve the derived database itself. The engine’s graph-export endpoint is switched off, so no request to this API returns chunks of the road network. If we ever turn it on, exported data ships labelled ODbL.
Results you compute — durations, distances, instructions — are produced works, and they are yours to keep and use. The one caveat worth stating plainly: a database you assemble from those results and then publicly redistribute may itself carry the share-alike obligation. Internal storage and use are unconditionally fine.
